Fun with Parabolic Curves

Image
Yesterday I saw a picture of an art project using parabolic curves so I pulled out some graph paper and tried it myself. So much fun! My 15 year old daughter saw what I was doing and thought it was cool (say what?!!) and asked me how to do it. I started to explain but she got lost pretty quick. Then it hit me, why not list out some ordered pairs on the coordinate plane to explain how to do it? An hour later it was complete. :) I've started several others as well, they are so much fun to create and I know my students will LOVE working on these!  I will post each one free for 24 hours , you can find them here in my new graphing fun category. Version One. Version Two Please download, enjoy and help me by leaving feedback. Something wrong or have a request? You can email me at crystal@baileyscorner.net. Thanks!

Area of Shaded Regions in 6th Grade Math

Image
I attended a workshop last week for Open Up Resources for math .  What a wonderful reminder it was of how students should be thinking and problem solving when learning new skills and concepts. :)  One of the lessons we worked through involved finding area of triangles by deriving that a triangle is half a rectangle. This reminded me of some task cards I started a few months ago but never published. I did some digging and voila, here they are!  You can download the forever free sample pack for or the full version (free for 24 hours only!) Enjoy and please don't forget to go back and leave a rating if you download it. :)  Check out all my free products on teacherspayteachers.com  Subscribe to my email list in the upper left corner to be the first to know about my freebies and giveaways!

Using Exit Tickets as a Formative Assessment

Image
This year I started trying exit tickets as a daily formative assessment in my classroom. To encourage my reluctant students to participate I also used them as a drawing for a daily incentive. They had to write their name on the back, fold it at least twice and drop it in my drawing bucket when they left class. I would draw a winner, post it the board and the winner would receive a prize the next day. I then had a helper at the beginning of the next class sort the exit tickets into piles based on answers. This was a great task to give a student who needed to have a job and I used different, but similar problems in each class to prevent cheating. :) This really helped me with forming small groups to address common errors for the next day or to reteach if many demonstrated a common misunderstanding. I also kept a class checklist to keep track of mastery.  This small thing made a big difference for my students this year!  I have posted a free sample pack of some of my area...

June Giveaway and 7 More Days!

Image
Here is the June  Giveaway running June 3-June 11th! Thank you for following my store and supporting me! a Rafflecopter giveaway As the school year winds down I have been doing a lot and thinking about a lot. As a teacher in North Carolina my daughter and I participated along with 30,000 other teachers from across our state in a rally on the opening day of the short session. What an experience!! My eyes are really opening to just how much our students need and are not provided. Teacherspayteachers has been a life saver for me in providing my students with materials and with income to purchase materials not provided by our state. Why this is necessary has been a big question on my mind lately. There is so much work that needs to be done to advocate for our students in NC and in our nation. As I finish up the school year I am busy writing "open when you graduate" letters for my 6th graders and enclosing their first day of middle school picture. I am so excited abou...

My Why

Took my nearly 15 year old daughter and her boyfriend to the movies Friday. Tickled that they needed me to open their candy and wanted kids meals afterwards. Played with the toy the whole drive home, lol. :) It was a nice end to a long week. Icing in the cake: walking into the theater to a certain young man excitedly calling out "Hi Ms. Bailey!" While he smiled and waved. Gave me a great big bear hug on the way out after and walked me out to parking lot engaging in nice conversation. Don't know why he was alone or where his parents were (he's a 7th grader) but grateful for the experiences I have. This young man's first interaction with me was about a year ago. He cussed at me in the hallway when I asked him to stop running. I made a decision to make this kid my best buddy. I spent weeks (with my 6th grade class watching) trying to "kill him with kindness." Everyday on the way to lunch as he was coming back with another class I'd say "h...

Mixing up Your Math Warmups and Homework

Image
I have recorded many of my lesson tutorials for years now but this year I have really added a lot for my students and I can see the positive difference it is making. I record explanations for each problem on their daily warm up and their daily homework. In the past I've noticed students just writing random answers down to appear finished with their work. They either were embarrassed they didn't know what to do or too lazy to try, either way it's not an effective practice tool if they aren't able to practice the skill accurately. This gives me a couple of scenarios. Some students still might choose to only write down the answers provided to them. I don't give them credit if they don't show their work. Some students write down all the the work shown with the answers but don't try it themselves before watching the video. This is a step in the right direction in my opinion and better than random numbers written on the page. My hope is that they'll slowly s...
